We often use Casablanca as the starting point for longer itineraries that continue through:
Casablanca → Rabat → Tangier → Chefchaouen → Fes → Sahara → Marrakech
This works particularly well because the route moves broadly in one direction rather than returning repeatedly to the same city.
Casablanca also makes sense when the best international flight schedule is substantially better than the alternatives.
Getting from Casablanca Airport
Travelers have several options:
- airport train
- airport bus/shuttle services
- taxi
- rental car
- pre-arranged private transfer
The railway station is particularly useful for travelers continuing toward Casablanca or connecting with Morocco’s wider rail network.

A private airport transfer can be more practical when:
- you arrive after a long overnight flight

- you want your driver to continue directly into the itinerary
The important question is not simply which option costs least.

Marrakech Menara Airport: Convenient for Marrakech and Southern Morocco
Marrakech Menara Airport is one of the easiest arrival airports for travelers whose first destination is Marrakech.
It is also a logical gateway for routes involving:

- Ouarzazate
- Dades Valley
- Sahara routes
- Essaouira
Official taxis operate from the airport, and ONDA also lists a city-airport bus service.
For first-time visitors staying in the medina, however, there is another detail that matters more than the airport-to-city distance:
Your vehicle may not be able to reach the door of your Riad.
Marrakech Medina arrivals
Many traditional riads are located inside pedestrian sections of the old city.

It can also work well for itineraries that continue toward:
- Meknes
- Volubilis
- Chefchaouen
- Middle Atlas

- Merzouga
For example:
Fes → Ifrane → Middle Atlas → Ziz Valley → Merzouga → Dades → Marrakech
is a logical one-way route.
Flying directly into Fes can therefore remove the need to begin in Casablanca and then spend additional time reaching Fes.
Arriving at a Fes riad
The same medina-access issue that exists in Marrakech also applies in Fes.
Fes el-Bali contains extensive pedestrian areas.
If your Riad is inside the historic medina, confirm:
- where your airport vehicle stops
- where someone from the Riad will meet you
- who handles luggage
- the hotel’s telephone or WhatsApp number
After a late flight, this preparation is much more valuable than simply knowing the distance between the airport and the city.
Tangier Airport: Strong Choice for Northern Morocco
Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is especially useful for trips focused on northern Morocco.
A route might begin:
Tangier → Tetouan → Chefchaouen → Fes
and then either continue toward Rabat and Casablanca or south toward the Middle Atlas and Sahara.
This avoids flying into Marrakech or Casablanca and then immediately traveling several hours north.
Tangier can be particularly attractive for travelers combining northern Morocco with Spain.
The airport is outside central Tangier, so plan your arrival transportation before landing, especially if you are continuing directly toward Chefchaouen rather than staying in Tangier.

Rabat-Salé Airport: Often Overlooked
Rabat-Salé Airport can be a useful alternative when flight schedules work well.
It is particularly convenient for:
- Rabat
- northern Morocco
- short city-focused journeys
- travelers who do not need Casablanca as part of the itinerary
Do not automatically assume that Casablanca Airport is the best choice simply because Casablanca is the larger international hub.
Compare the complete journey.
If a flight to Rabat fits your schedule and your itinerary begins in Rabat, the smaller airport may simplify the first day considerably.
Agadir Al Massira Airport: Best for Agadir and the Souss Region
Agadir Al Massira Airport is the main gateway for travelers focusing on:
- Agadir
- Taghazout
- Souss region
- Atlantic beaches
- nearby southern areas
ONDA places the airport approximately 25 kilometers from Agadir.
It is generally less useful for a classic first-time route centered on Fes, Chefchaouen, Marrakech, and Merzouga unless Agadir genuinely forms part of the itinerary.
Do not add Agadir simply because your flight lands there.
Likewise, do not book Agadir just because the airfare is lower without calculating the additional transportation required afterward.
What About Essaouira, Ouarzazate, and Other Smaller Airports?
Morocco has several additional airports, including:
- Essaouira Mogador
- Ouarzazate
- Errachidia
- Nador
- Oujda
- Tetouan
- Dakhla
- Laayoune
- Al Hoceima
These can be extremely useful when flight schedules align with a specialized itinerary.
The limitation is usually frequency and routing, not the airport itself.
